In the spring, the Gay Lea Foundation announced a $5,000 donation to Community Living North Halton (CLNH) for its Saturday Centre Program. CLHN is a non-profit agency that has been providing support and services to children and adults with special needs in Halton Hills and Milton since 1955.
The Saturday Centre program has been running for many years, providing recreational activities and a place for children and youth with developmental disabilities to go for a day of fun and exploration. The program is also a respite for families.
“The donation from the Gay Lea Foundation supports staffing and program costs, and also increases CLHN’s ability to purchase supplies, equipment and fund outings, such as swimming,” says Karen Wilson, Manager of Children and Youth Services at CLHN. “The donation also allows the children and youth to participate in community events and activities enjoyed by many others in their respective communities.”
“Saturday Centre Too Milton Juniors has been a godsend for our son Nathan and our family,” says Caroline Parent, mother of Nathan. “This program has brought so many benefits for him in terms of the friendships he has made with children who have similar needs, and how it has helped him develop his independence. The educators are amazing and are always finding new ways to develop each child’s strengths, whether it be at the center itself doing crafts and games or on outdoor activities. Nathan has learned to socialize and self-regulate and is now less prone to meltdowns.”
“The donation received from the Gay Lea Foundation facilitates one of CLHN’s highest values: inclusion,” says Wilson. “We believe all citizens have a right to fully participate in their community. The Saturday Centre Program helps children feel they are part of a community where everyone belongs.”
